I’ve known several kids with Autism. As my room has lots of routine, I tend to get these very unique individuals put in my class. What’s REALLY cool about these folks, is that writing stories with them as the main character is the best way to teach them how to handle social situations. Then, you reread the story with them whenever they need to review that social skill. They do tend not to get social cues like when other kids are tired of talking to you, they start moving away in anticipation of ending the conversation. Autistics sometimes miss nonverbal cues like that and keep right on talking. They are very sweet people, overall. 🙂
