You get an extra post tonight! I was thinking about India and my first introduction to it. I first became interested in this magical place after reading the book, The Little Princess, by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It has been a long time since I read the book and I don’t remember if this scene was in the book or not. But I think it’s an amazing example of a young person standing up for herself against a more powerful bully. If Sara doesn’t do it in the book, it wasn’t because she wasn’t capable of it. Sara (which is Hebrew for Princess) is a child who loses everything: her family, her wealth, her place in the world. Yet she refuses to surrender herself to despair. ” But, I don’t believe in it,” she says solemnly to Miss Minchin. Note: she lets the bully have their temper tantrum. Then, when the bully turns to walk away, Sara tells the bully what SHE thinks. The bully responds, of course. They always do. But she knows that Sara will not be beaten down. I have loved this character in literature since I was nine years old. Check out the movie clip. Xxoo
