We went to Olvera Street several times when I took you with me. But you did not get to go on Halloween or All Soul’s Day. I have to say, the Mexicans know how to celebrate death and their loved ones. I honor them for that. They do this big parade with incense and flowers. People dress up like their ancestors (family that has passed on) and they parade up and down the streets celebrating and dancing. Mexicans are descended from the ancient Mayans and Aztecs, so that’s why you’ll see them wearing tribal outfits with feathers and such. Then, they create these HUGE family alters, celebrating the lives and accomplishments of their departed loved ones. People are invited to be cleansed (with the smoke of the incense – copal) in order to be ready to receive messages (or visions) from those who have passed on. I did it a few years ago for my grandparents who have passed and I’m going to try to do it again this year. This is a video of all the events on Olvera Street during this cool holiday. Halloween is so much MORE than trick or treating for candy. It is the time to honor those who have left this earth and have passed on. They are still with us – in spirit. Check it out!
