I’m watching the presidential debates. Why? Why can’t these folks just answer the questions posed to them?
The first question of the night had to do with how the candidates are presenting themselves as good models for children who may be watching the debates. Neither candidate really discussed how THEY are good models of adults who play “the game” of running for public office as responsible citizens.
In my view, they both used the time alotted to them to introduce what they were going to talk about during the second debate. “America is good!” Hillary kept saying. How are we good? Is it good to nominate people who lie and manipulate the American people?
I’m not naive. I know that sometimes, lies are a means to protecting oneself. George Washington was not the “I cannot tell a lie” president he has been made out to be. If he hadn’t lied to the British about the state of our troops during the revolution, America would not be here today.
But where do we draw the line? Can the world respect a presidential candidate that refuses to answer a direct question? Most people don’t respect such a person. But this is a presidential election – so it’s ok? There are worse crimes. And BOTH of these candidates have committed them: non disclosure, hiding (or deleting) evidence, rape, verbal and sexual assault…and the list goes on.
